When you’re on the move, you can count on a rail operator to keep you safe.
“I think it is a big part of what keeps people in the business,” said Tormach Cnc, president and CEO of Railtrack.
“If you are a passenger, it’s a lot easier to get caught.” “
There are a lot of people that have done the wrong thing and it has cost them,” he said.
“If you are a passenger, it’s a lot easier to get caught.”
The company has a $100,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of someone who commits a rail crime.
It’s an incentive that makes it harder for the public to report the crimes of rail thieves.
“A lot of times it’s not until you’re in trouble and you have to call the police, you don’t know what the consequences will be, and you don`t know who to call,” Cnc said.
It also makes it hard for authorities to identify the culprits because they can’t find the location of a stolen property.
And, of course, there are people who might get caught, and that is not an option for the company.
Cnc has heard from rail operators who say they are trying to increase their awareness of the issue.
He said there are train operators in the U.S. who are working to educate their crews and to encourage them to follow the advice of the RCMP.
Railtrack also works with its provincial counterpart in Manitoba to identify train thieves.
It does this by asking questions of its employees about their history, their previous rail operations and whether there have been incidents involving their vehicles.
“We want to be able to find out if there is anything that can be done to keep them from doing that,” CNC said.
He added that the company also wants to be on the lookout for more incidents.
“The more we do this, the better we are going to be,” he added.
