A low-cost CNC machine shop in South Korea has sold $50 million worth of CNC shields, machine guns, and other weapons to a Chinese company.
The CNC Machine Shop in Gyeonggi Province, which specializes in CNC machining, has sold more than 1.5 million CNC equipment to a Taiwanese company that is reportedly in the process of selling the machines to China.
According to a report from Korea’s Hankyoreh News, the company that bought the equipment is a Chinese manufacturer called Dabang Industries.
Dabang is reportedly a major Chinese manufacturer that manufactures machines for the military and is also a major manufacturer of military parts for the civilian market.
The news report said that Dabangs manufacturing facility in Gieongs coastal city of Dongguan is also where the company plans to build a large new CNC manufacturing plant.
According the report, the Taiwanese company is selling the CNC tools and other CNC gear to an undisclosed Chinese company called Tandem Defense.
Tandem Defense is reportedly planning to sell CNC parts to China’s military and military contractors.
According a report by the Seoul-based Korea Times, the new Chinese manufacturing plant in Giesang will reportedly be located in the same area as the old Dabanga facility, which Dabrang reportedly closed down in 2008.
In 2009, a report in The Wall Street Journal revealed that China was buying a significant portion of the U.S. defense industry.
The report said China had spent more than $1.2 trillion on military equipment and services in the last two decades, and it was investing $2 trillion into a new military-related manufacturing facility at a U.K. base.
Dongguan, which has been known for its thriving CNC industry for more than a century, is not a particularly well-known location for military operations, as it has long been the site of battles for Korea and Vietnam.
According an earlier report by Quartz, the newly built facility will likely have the capacity to produce the military’s first production line, which will allow for a rapid and efficient increase in Cnc production capacity.
According Quartz, it is unclear whether the new manufacturing facility will be in South Korean or Chinese territory.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology did not immediately respond to Quartz’s request for comment.
